Fun pic

(Tianjin, oct.2005)

Nothing exists,

"Nothing exists; all is a dream. God - man - the world - the sun, the moon, the wilderness of stars - a dream, all a dream; they have no existence. Nothing exists save empty space - and you!"

"I!"

"And you are not you - you have no body, no blood, no bones, you are but a thought. I myself have no existence; I am but a dream - your dream, creature of your imagination. In a moment you will have realized this, then you will banish me from your visions and I shall dissolve into the nothingness out of which you made me . . .

"I am perishing already - I am failing - I am passing away. In a little while you will be alone in shoreless space, to wander its limitless solitudes without friend or comrade forever - for you will remain a thought, the only existent thought, and by your nature inextinguishable, indestructible. But I, your poor servant, have revealed you to yourself and set you free. Dream other dreams, and better!

"Strange! that you should not have suspected years ago - centuries, ages, eons, ago! - for you have existed, companionless, through all the eternities.
Strange, indeed, that you should not have suspected that your universe and its contents were only dreams, visions, fiction! Strange, because they are so frankly and hysterically insane - like all dreams: a God who could make good children as easily as bad, yet preferred to make bad ones; who could have made every one of them happy, yet never made a single happy one; who made them prize their bitter life, yet stingily cut it short; who gave his angels eternal happiness unearned, yet required his other children to earn it; who gave his angels painless lives, yet cursed his other children with biting miseries and maladies of mind and body; who mouths justice and invented hell - mouths mercy and invented hell - mouths Golden Rules, and forgiveness multiplied by seventy times seven, and invented hell; who mouths morals to other people and has none himself; who frowns upon crimes, yet commits them all; who created man without invitation, then tries to shuffle the responsibility for man's acts upon man, instead of honorably placing it where it belongs, upon himself; and finally, with altogether divine obtuseness, invites this poor, abused slave to worship him! . . .

"You perceive, now, that these things are all impossible except in a dream. You perceive that they are pure and puerile insanities, the silly creations of an imagination that is not conscious of its freaks - in a word, that they are a dream, and you the maker of it. The dream-marks are all present; you should have recognized them earlier.

"It is true, that which I have revealed to you; there is no God, no universe, no human race, no earthly life, no heaven, no hell. It is all a dream - a grotesque and foolish dream. Nothing exists but you. And you are but a thought - a vagrant thought, a useless thought, a homeless thought, wandering forlorn among the empty eternities!"

He vanished, and left me appalled; for I knew, and realized, that all he had said was true.

THE MYSTERIOUS STRANGER

What's your problem?!

One of our professors is worth mentioning here.

Basically, he is ok. He can even be nice. But he is teaching a course to international students, and the course is supposed to be in English. And his English is non-existent…And it is really annoying! During first classes, he was encouraging students to ask questions and express their thoughts about the subject. Good. The only problem was that when somebody tried to ask a question, it would take the teacher about 15 minutes to understand it…
He is funny. When somebody raised his/her hand, the professor would point at him and say “OK, what’s your problem?!” That used to make us laugh. He must have noticed, so he doesn’t say that anymore. Actually, this class reminds me of an English class for our professor.

Last class, during a case study, he was talking about employers who force their employees work too much, “24 point 5 hours a day”. Even if I wasn’t really listening, I raised my head. He didn’t notice his own joke, as nobody else did. My classmates are so attentive during this exciting class.
Another time, during the same class, I raised my head from the laptop another time to look at the slides and I read “He and her husband…” Okay! So I started to listen to what the professor was saying. “He” turned out to be the woman’s family name. But it looked so funny on the ppt.
I feel sorry for this professor, but when the class is boring at this point, 2.45 hours is ve-e-ry long, and I need to entertain myself in any other way…

Chinese education,

The thing that inspired me to blog about is Chinese education.
The Chinese education system is not well-known worldwide, but it is the oldest one, and is worth admiration…

The Chinese were the first to have an examination system. In the old days, one had to pass an exam to become a civil servant, which was the most respected position. The last tour of exams was held by the Emperor himself. So this required long years of preparation and studies… While travelling across China, we often visited those sort of small temples, which actually used to be that or that famous scholar’s home.

BTW, one of the local dishes in Yunnan province is called “noodles from across the bridge” (过桥米线), and the story comes from those studious times… Once there was a famous scholar, who spent his life studying in his little Chinese-style “cottage” in the middle of the lake. A long-long bridge led to there, and every day, his wife would prepare a bowl of noodles for this scholar’s lunch (even living across the lake, he managed to be her husband…). But by the time the woman would cross the bridge, the food would be cold, and the husband would beat her. So one day she just made the soup, prepared noodles and some dried stuff to put in that soup, and at lunch time, she put everything in the bowl, covered it with a plate and by the time that she crossed the bridge, the food was ready and remained steaming hot. The man was happy… So nowadays, if you go to Yunnan, you have to try this dish, it’s a huge bowl of noodles, which you prepare the same way as that witty woman.

So, about those exams. Every year they would take place during several months. And during all that time, the candidates would live in a tiny hut, where they could only sleep, eat and study. (Dream life?!)

From those days, education became number one priority in China. Parents would do anything to have their kid enter the best university. And when you think of how many Chinese people there are comparing to the number of those universities, you get why the competition is so fierce. Especially after the of the one child policy, the whole family’s hopes lay on the only child. It makes spoiled kids and kids who only know how to “study hard”. BTW, those are the first Chinese words you learn, along with “hello”, “thank you” and “rice”.

Maybe that is also why the teachers’ attitudes are so different from what we are used to in China. Let me give you an example. It happened last week, during my Organizational behaviour class.
The class is in English, and so are supposed to be all the teaching materials. Suddenly during the class, the teacher shows us a slide entirely in Chinese and says “This is a story from Chinese history, it is very philosophical one, hard to translate, so sorry international students, we will do that in Chinese”. As international students start grudging, the teacher added: “Don’t worry, even most Chinese don’t understand that. Who understands the story? Nobody? You see, I told you! Next slide…”
Wow, I was shocked by this attitude. The teacher not only does not explain things, but she also tells you are not smart enough to understand! Very often, Chinese people do not even try to explain things to us foreigners, they just say that it is their traditional culture/mentality/philosophy… and we won’t be able to get it anyway.
Then later I found this quote from Confucius that can maybe clear it all up a little:
(sorry for the bad translation) “The person who is not willing to learn, is not worth giving guidelines; The person who doesn’t have difficulties in expressing his thoughts is not worth helping; The person who, being given one angle cannot have the idea of the other three, is not worth teaching.”

I also noticed that teaching is kind of tyranny here, the Teacher having absolute power over students…
Teaching is a very respectful profession, even if it doesn’t pay that well. And the teacher has a complete authority over the students, no matter how old they are. In my MBA program at Tsinghua, some Chinese students are in their late thirties, and still, they have some sort of fear of the teacher. Even their voices change when they address the Teacher.
So as I understand it, school studies are pretty much an assimilation of a huge amount of knowledge without asking questions or discussing what you learn. Hence, the total incompetence of Chinese to lead a discussion in class. Only at MBA level nowadays can Chinese students express themselves in class (which stays limited however). And when they do talk, it takes them half an hour to express themselves. This is due to their English, which is a written, not spoken level. And they LOVE introducing their ideas, which means that it takes a guy 5 minutes before he answers “yes” or “no”. The shortest introduction sounds like this “About the question who from managers must be responsible for the errors in delivery system, my opinion is to my mind I think that maybe sometimes it’s mister Smith”. God, they are not efficient! And they never say things directly…Maybe it’s just being polite and respectful towards the teacher. But the teacher can say things directly! She can tell things like “go to your point, we have no time, come on!”. And students must call the teacher “Teacher”, not by his/her name. When I think that in the States they call their teacher by the first name, regardless of the age difference…

First post

Welcome to my new blog world !
First of all, I guess that some explanation is needed on how this whole thing will work…
So here I go. Being an “international” person has its beauties, but also a load of problems. One of them concerns my blog. I know people all over the world, and sometimes they don’t speak the same language…You might say that English, or at least a “broken English” (that is what we, non-native speakers speak) is THE world language, but I do have some friends or mostly family who do not speak English. Besides that, I also belong to this whole French world, since I live and study in France for 5 years now. French people do speak English, but they LOVE their language, and so do I. So I will try to keep my blog international for all readers can (hopefully) enjoy it, but I hope that my readers won’t be offended if sometimes translation is not accurate or even impossible.
Now for my nick. It means “magician”. Sounds mysterious and somehow ironic.

Now goes the fun!

Mon nick veut dire « magicien ».
